A family reading habit does not need a large book collection. Start with an accessible story, a comfortable seat and a little uninterrupted time. This four-week plan is an invitation to try something small together.

Week 1: Let your child choose

Choose a book about something your child enjoys: animals, nature, comics or family life. Agree on a convenient time, perhaps after dinner. A few pages are enough to begin. Fifteen minutes is a suggestion, not a target to be tested.

Week 2: Take turns

Read a passage each if your child is ready to read independently. Younger children can point to pictures and describe what they see. Explain unfamiliar words through everyday examples without repeatedly interrupting the story.

Week 3: Talk about the story

Ask which character your child likes or what they would do in the same situation. There is no single correct answer. If they want to keep listening, leave the conversation for another day.

Week 4: Keep a reading memory

Write the book title and date on a sheet of paper, then add a favourite sentence or drawing. Choose the next book together. Borrowing from friends or a library lets you try different kinds of books before buying them.

Before you begin

  • Choose a book your child can enjoy at their current reading level.
  • Find a time that works for the family.
  • Keep paper and pencils nearby.

If you miss a day, continue next time. Enjoying the time together matters more than keeping a perfect record.

Prepare for the activity

Try pages from two books and notice which invites more interest. Familiar stories can be reread. Keep books accessible and use a bookmark. Multilingual families can discuss a story in the language the child uses most comfortably.

Examples and adaptations

An adult can narrate while the child reads dialogue or points to pictures. Save related questions for later exploration. Correct selectively when meaning is affected, keeping the story and the experience of being heard central.

Continue and review progress

After four weeks, choose which routine to retain. Ask about new genres or independent reading. Adjust timing or duration if necessary. Borrowing and exchanging books can offer variety without requiring frequent purchases.
