28/09/2026 · Shared bookshelves
A shared collection can begin with a small shelf in a space whose owner has agreed to host it. Before asking for books, decide who it serves, who looks after it and when readers can borrow.
Ask readers what they need
Young children and adults learning new skills need different books. Ask about their interests and choose complete, readable copies in good condition. Check textbooks against the curriculum in use before treating them as current study material.
Keep borrowing simple
Number each book and record its title, borrower, loan date and expected return date. Collect only necessary contact details. Keep the lending record with the coordinator rather than publishing readers' personal information.
Share responsibility
- Choose someone to organise and check the books.
- Set opening times that suit the location.
- Explain how to report damage or extend a loan.
- Periodically review books that are rarely borrowed.
Accept only what you can care for
Set aside damp, incomplete or unsuitable books. After the first few weeks, ask readers what they would like next so the collection grows around their needs.

Prepare for the activity
Ask potential readers about subjects and reading levels before accepting books. Choose an agreed dry, accessible location. Check condition and remove private papers. A small relevant collection is easier to maintain than unsorted boxes.
Examples and adaptations
Use a few clear categories and simple book identifiers. Trial borrowing and returning with several users. Collect only necessary information and send reminders privately. Keep rules short and realistic for the people maintaining the shelf.
Continue and review progress
Review demand, damage and missing subjects monthly. Invite informal discussion without requiring written reviews. Confirm recipients want books before transferring them. Regular use and care matter more than the initial collection size.
