Use paper, two books as supports and identical light objects on a low table.
Try it step by step
- Test a flat sheet between the supports.
- Fold another sheet and repeat with the same gap.
- Record the load each design holds and draw the structures.
Prepare for the activity
Prepare equal sheets, two stable supports and identical lightweight loads. Work low on a table and avoid glass or hazardous falling objects. Fix the support distance and loading position. Predict how folds might change performance.
Examples and adaptations
Compare two designs using the same amount of paper. Add loads one at a time and record bending or failure. Repeat if placement slips. Change only one factor per comparison so differences can be interpreted.
Continue and review progress
Sketch the designs beside their results and compare them with your prediction. Explain a useful modification rather than simply declaring a winner. Investigate inconsistent trials by checking folds and load positions. Finish with a new design question and tidy materials.
After the activity
Keep paper and test objects consistent. Repeat surprising results and check which conditions changed.
