Three learners, three rotating roles

Give everyone a task so group study does not depend on one person.

A group of friends at a coffee shop

Choose a manageable problem and agree on a finishing time.

Try it step by step

  1. Assign an explainer, a questioner and a note-taker.
  2. Rotate roles after each section.
  3. Finish with an individual task completed without the group's answer.

Prepare for the activity

Agree on one manageable task rather than an entire chapter. Everyone brings an attempted solution and a question. Rotate three roles: explaining, questioning and recording. Provide separate paper so all members can work.

Examples and adaptations

The explainer describes reasoning, the questioner requests examples or exceptions, and the recorder notes agreed conclusions. Mark disagreements for a teacher. A faster learner should offer prompts instead of completing the task for others.

Continue and review progress

Finish with a short individual problem. If only one person can solve it, change the group's approach. Share common notes while keeping personal reflections private. A clearer unresolved question can be a useful result of a session.

After the activity

Take unresolved questions to a teacher. Shared notes are not proof that everyone understands.
