Everyday English book

Choose five objects in one room and a suitable reference for spelling and pronunciation.

Try it step by step

  1. Write each word in a simple sentence about use or location.
  2. Name objects without checking notes, then listen again to the reference.
  3. Describe the room with the words at the end of the week.

Prepare for the activity

Choose one small area and a few frequently used objects. Pair each word with a meaningful sentence. Check spelling and pronunciation in a reliable learning resource. Ask others before placing labels in shared spaces.

Examples and adaptations

For a cup, practise naming it, requesting it and describing its colour. Hide the label and use the word in a different situation. Take turns asking and answering with a partner. Aim for a clear short message rather than translating every word mechanically.

Continue and review progress

Write a small conversation using familiar words at the end of the week. If recognition still depends on labels, practise context before adding vocabulary. Move to another area once comfortable and save your own sentences as evidence of use.

After the activity

Avoid attaching labels to fragile surfaces. Move to another room once the first set is familiar.
